Lipetsk Region in 3 Russian words
Located south of Moscow, Lipetsk Region is home to one of the world's largest steel mills and one of the smallest nature reserves. Here are three more symbols of this region.
1. ШУХОВСКАЯ БАШНЯ (Shukhov Tower)
In 1895, Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov built the world's first hyperboloid structure in Moscow. The tower was displayed at the ‘All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition’ in Nizhny Novgorod, after which it was purchased by philanthropist Yuri Nechayev-Maltsov for his Polibino Estate, now a village of the same name in Lipetsk Region.
2. ЕЛЕЦКОЕ КРУЖЕВО (‘Yelets’ Lace)
This type of Russian lace originated in the town of Yelets in the 18th century. It’s woven using bobbins – special spools with handles. Decorated with floral patterns and garlands of flowers, with a spiderweb-like lattice background, ‘Yelets’ lace is renowned for its delicacy and remarkable lightness.
3. ЕВГЕНИЙ ЗАМЯТИН (Yevgeny Zamyatin)
Yevgeny Zamyatin, the renowned Russian writer and author of the celebrated dystopian novel ‘Myi’ (‘We’), was born in the town of Lebedyan, northwest of Lipetsk, on February 1, 1884. Today, his house-museum is located there.
